Where We’re Going (2025)

One of the best things about preaching through books of the Bible verse by verse is that you know exactly what your next sermon passage will be. I’ve talked to many pastors who struggle each Monday and spend hours trying to think of an exciting topic that will be relevant to the lives of their congregation. I am so thankful that God’s Word is living, active, inspired, and always timely!

Each October, I spend a few days in prayer trying to figure out where the Lord would have us go as a church during our worship services. I try to balance Old Testament books and New Testament books so that we study from both as we believe that all 66 books of the Bible are inspired and profitable. As we look in our Bible, we also know that some books are significantly longer or shorter than others, and this means that some sermon series’ will be longer or shorter than others. As we look ahead to 2025, here’s an overview that is written in pencil, not pen, as it is always subject to change a bit!

Sunday Morning Sermon Series

  • We’ll kick off our Sunday sermons with the book of Titus, as this series is entitled “Doctrine and Devotion.” During this series, we’ll see the importance of believing rightly in God and living rightly for Him!

  • After Titus, we’ll move to the Old Testament and study the book of Jonah. Jonah is a well-known individual in the Bible, but parts of this book are often overlooked. This study will remind us that our God stops storms and saves sinners!

  • After Jonah, we’ll have a mini-series leading up to Easter Sunday and look at several Old and New Testament passages that tell us about God’s plan of salvation and how Jesus died to save sinners and rose to provide us with hope and everlasting life!

  • After Easter, we’ll spend a few weeks in one of my favorite chapters in the Bible: Romans 8! This series is entitled “Crosses, Crowns, and Celebration,” as Romans 8 begins with no condemnation, ends with no separation, and in between, there is plenty of celebration. I pray this series encourages us as we prepare for the summer months.

  • In the summer, we’ll do a series through the Psalms. This is something that I like to do most years, as the summer months are often when people vacation and travel and miss more frequently than during the school year. Because of this, it’s easier to do standalone sermons that don’t build on top of each other like most of our other sermons throughout the year. We’ll look at several favorite and familiar psalms and be reminded of all the reasons we have to give our God thanks!

  • After the summer, we’ll begin the Gospel of Luke! Luke is the longest book (by word count) in the New Testament, and this will be a much longer sermon series than any of our previous ones together. Because of this, we’ll split Luke up into four parts (Fall - 25, Spring - 26, Fall 26, Spring 27) and be reminded that Jesus Christ came to turn an upside down world right-side up.

  • We’ll conclude the year with Advent and look at Old Testament promises that point us to the birth of Jesus Christ!

Wednesday Night Series

  • When we resume our Wednesday night study time after the new year, we’ll start by wrapping up the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 that we began in the fall of 2024. This series will help us better see what we believe as a Southern Baptist Church!

  • After this series, we’ll do a video-based study called the American Gospel. This movie is excellent at outlining false gospels that have been taught and believed in our country and provides us with helpful tools as we minister to people who might be deceived regarding what the true, Biblical Gospel really is. I am excited about this study and the discussion time that we’ll have around Easter!

  • At the moment, we’re planning to take Wednesday nights off during the summer months—this might change, but for the purpose of this calendar, I don’t have a plan for these weeks.

  • Whenever we resume Wednesday services in the fall, we’ll launch with a series called “False Fruits” and examine several statements that sound like truth but, in actuality, have a tiny twist to them that makes them extremely dangerous. This series is based on a book written by Jared Wilson (Professor at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary) entitled “The Gospel According to Satan,” as he outlines many of these statements and offers a Biblical corrective.

  • Depending on how everything goes, we might end the year with another video-based series or a shorter book study (1 Peter, 1 Thessalonians, James come to mind).
